Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a nucleotide composed of nicotinamide, ribose, and phosphate. Its structure links nicotinamide to D-ribose 5-phosphate through a glycosidic bond, placing it in the pyridine nucleotide family. The compound exists in alpha and beta anomeric forms, and the beta form is the one used in NAD+ biosynthesis. NMN is not a protein or a hormone; it is a small water-soluble molecule that occurs in living cells as a metabolic intermediate.
Natural sources of NMN include mammals, plants, and microorganisms, where it functions as an intermediate in NAD+ salvage and biosynthesis pathways. In mammals, the enzyme nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase produces NMN from nicotinamide and phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase. Some foods contain measurable NMN, but reported amounts vary widely by species, tissue, and analytical method. The extent to which dietary NMN contributes to cellular NAD+ pools remains an open research question.
The biologically relevant form of NMN is generally the beta anomer, which is recognized by NMN adenylyltransferases. NMN is polar and water soluble, and it does not readily diffuse across lipid membranes without assistance. Whether intact NMN enters cells through a specific transporter remains an open question; some studies propose solute carrier family members, while other work favors extracellular dephosphorylation to nicotinamide riboside followed by uptake. This transport and compartmentalization debate affects how researchers interpret oral administration studies. The distinction between intracellular synthesis and extracellular delivery is central to current discussion.
Terminology around NMN can be confusing because several related compounds share the vitamin B3 family. Nicotinamide riboside is a nucleoside, whereas NMN is a nucleotide with a phosphate group, and NAD+ is a dinucleotide coenzyme rather than a simple precursor. Niacin and nicotinamide are also NAD+ precursors but follow different metabolic entry points. In commercial and scientific writing, NMN usually refers to beta-nicotinamide mononucleotide unless another form is specified. Consistent nomenclature helps distinguish chemical identity from proposed biological effects.

Research on NMN includes cell studies, animal experiments, and a growing number of human trials. Many early findings come from mice, where changes in NAD+ levels and metabolic markers have been reported. Human data are more limited, and questions remain about effective routes of administration, tissue distribution, and long-term effects. Some trials measure NAD+ in blood or tissue, while others assess physical function or metabolic outcomes. Regulatory status differs between countries, and NMN is not universally approved as a dietary supplement or therapeutic agent.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, commonly abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring with a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. The compound appears in cells across many organisms as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, or NAD+. Because NMN sits close to NAD+ in metabolism, it has drawn interest in biochemistry and aging research. The molecule is not a dietary essential nutrient in the classical sense, and its presence in food is generally low and variable.
NAD+ serves as a coenzyme in redox reactions and as a substrate for enzymes involved in DNA repair and cellular signaling. In the salvage pathway, nicotinamide is converted to NMN by the enzyme NAMPT. NMN is then converted to NAD+ by NMNAT enzymes. A separate route links nicotinamide riboside to NMN through phosphorylation. These pathways maintain NAD+ levels, which can decline with age or metabolic stress in some tissues. The relative contribution of circulating NMN to tissue NAD+ remains an active area of study.
Research on NMN has expanded because NAD+ concentrations decline with age in some tissues and because NAD+ participates in energy metabolism, DNA repair, and signaling. Animal studies have reported changes in NAD+ levels after NMN administration, but human data are more limited and often focus on safety, pharmacokinetics, and biomarker changes. Questions remain about oral absorption, tissue distribution, and whether changes in blood NAD+ reflect changes inside specific organs. NMN is not an approved drug, and claims about its clinical effects should be distinguished from established biochemical findings.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide, abbreviated NMN, is a naturally occurring nucleotide. Its structure combines a nicotinamide ring, a ribose sugar, and a phosphate group. The compound exists in cells as an intermediate in the production of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, a central redox cofactor. NMN is distinct from nicotinamide riboside, another related pyridine nucleotide, although the two compounds can converge in metabolic pathways. Its chemical formula is C11H15N2O8P, and it carries a net negative charge at physiological pH.
Bruce Glick grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and was interested in birds as a child. His father, Peter Glick, was the Secretary of Labor for Pennsylvania. Glick served in World War II. He went to Rutgers University and studied birds majoring in poultry science, graduating in 1951. In 1950 he married Kay McCall. He received an M.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts in genetics in 1952 and attended Ohio State University as a Ph.D. student, graduating with a PhD in physiology in 1955. While there, he worked on determining the purpose of the Bursa of Fabricius, a gland that he was able to remove from a goose without any apparent effect. A fellow graduate student, Timothy Chang, worked with Glick's geese in a different study, and noticed that the birds without the Bursa of Fabricius did not produce expected antibodies. Glick and Chang wrote up the results of this study and were unable to get it published in Science, so it was published in Poultry Science in 1956. Their publication, considered a landmark paper, is one of the most cited works from Poultry Science.
The American IFR (Integral Fast Reactor) can also be operated in an incineration mode, having some advantages in not accumulating the plutonium-242 isotope or the long-lived actinides, which cannot be easily burned except in a fast reactor. Also IFR fuel has a high proportion of burnable isotopes, while in CANDU an inert material is needed to dilute the fuel; this means the IFR can burn a higher fraction of its fuel before needing reprocessing. Most plutonium is produced in research reactors or plutonium production reactors called breeder reactors because they produce more plutonium than they consume fuel; in principle, such reactors make extremely efficient use of natural uranium. In practice, their construction and operation is sufficiently difficult that they are generally only used to produce plutonium. Breeder reactors are generally (but not always) fast reactors, since fast neutrons are somewhat more efficient at plutonium production. Plutonium-239 is more frequently used in nuclear weapons than uranium-235, as it is easier to obtain in quantity capable of criticality. The process of enriching uranium, i.e. increasing the ratio of 235U to 238U to weapons grade, is generally a more lengthy and costly process than the production of plutonium-239 from 238U and subsequent chemical separation.

=== Substrate specificity === Under normal circumstances, caspases recognize tetra-peptide sequences on their substrates and hydrolyze peptide bonds after aspartic acid residues. Caspase 3 and caspase 7 share similar substrate specificity by recognizing tetra-peptide motif Asp-x-x-Asp. The C-terminal Asp is absolutely required while variations at other three positions can be tolerated. Caspase substrate specificity has been widely used in caspase based inhibitor and drug design.
=== Medical and diagnostic applications === Prospective parents can be tested for being genetic carriers, or their children might be tested for actually being affected by a disease. DNA samples for prenatal testing can be obtained by amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, or even by the analysis of rare fetal cells circulating in the mother's bloodstream. PCR analysis is also essential to preimplantation genetic diagnosis, where individual cells of a developing embryo are tested for mutations.
The institutions at lower levels were overseen and at times supplanted by primary party organizations. However, in practice the degree of control the party was able to exercise over the state bureaucracy, particularly after the death of Stalin, was far from total, with the bureaucracy pursuing different interests that were at times in conflict with the party, nor was the party itself monolithic from top to bottom, although factions were officially banned.
== Behaviour and ecology == Emus are diurnal birds and spend their day foraging, preening their plumage with their beak, dust bathing and resting. They are generally gregarious birds apart from the breeding season, and while some forage, others remain vigilant to their mutual benefit. They are able to swim when necessary, although they rarely do so unless the area is flooded or they need to cross a river.
The three substrates of this enzyme are saccharopine, oxidised nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+), and water. Its products are L-glutamic acid, L-allysine, reduced NADH, and a proton. This enzyme belongs to the family of oxidoreductases, specifically those acting on the CH-NH group of donors with NAD+ or NADP+ as acceptor. The systematic name of this enzyme class is N6-(L-1,3-dicarboxypropyl)-L-lysine:NAD+ oxidoreductase (L-glutamate-forming). Other names in common use include dehydrogenase, saccharopine (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide,, glutamate-forming), saccharopin dehydrogenase, NAD+ oxidoreductase (L-2-aminoadipic-delta-semialdehyde and, glutamate forming), aminoadipic semialdehyde synthase, saccharopine dehydrogenase (NAD+, L-glutamate-forming), 6-N-(L-1,3-dicarboxypropyl)-L-lysine:NAD+ oxidoreductase, and (L-glutamate-forming). This enzyme participates in lysine degradation.

After the rule of the Jagiellonian dynasty ended in 1572, Henry of Valois (later King Henry III of France) was the winner of the first "free election" by the Polish nobility, held in 1573. He had to agree to the restrictive pacta conventa obligations and fled Poland in 1574 when news arrived of the vacancy of the French throne, to which he was the heir presumptive. From the start, the royal elections increased foreign influence in the Commonwealth as foreign powers sought to manipulate the Polish nobility to place candidates amicable to their interests. The reign of Stephen Báthory of Hungary followed (r. 1576–1586). He was militarily and domestically assertive and is revered in Polish historical tradition as a rare case of a successful elective king. The establishment of the legal Crown Tribunal in 1578 meant a transfer of many appellate cases from the royal to noble jurisdiction.
=== Threats to quality === TMA (tristeza y muerte de agave – "agave depression and death") is a blight that has reduced the production of the agave grown to produce tequila. This has resulted in lower production and higher prices throughout the early 21st century, and due to the long maturation of the plant, will likely continue to affect prices for years to come.
==== Aqueous suspensions ==== Progesterone has been found to have a considerably longer duration of action by intramuscular injection when administered in the form of a microcrystalline aqueous suspension (crystal sizes of 0.02–0.1 mm) than as an oil solution. Whereas a single intramuscular injection of 25 to 350 mg progesterone in oil solution has a duration of 2 to 6 days in terms of clinical biological effect in the uterus in women, a single intramuscular injection of 50 to 300 mg microcrystalline progesterone in aqueous suspension has a duration of 7 to 14 days. As a result, intramuscular progesterone in oil solution is given once every 1 to 3 days at typical clinical doses, whereas intramuscular microcrystalline progesterone in aqueous suspension can be given once weekly or at even longer intervals. The duration of microcrystalline aqueous suspensions is dependent both on drug concentration and on crystal size. A larger needle size is needed for aqueous suspensions of steroids to allow the crystals to pass through the needle lumen. A 20- or 21-gauge needle has been reported to be suitable for the injection of aqueous suspensions of microcrystalline progesterone. Formulations of microcrystalline progesterone in aqueous suspension for long-lasting depot use via intramuscular injection were on the market in the 1950s under a variety of brand names including Flavolutan, Luteosan, Lutocyclin M, and Lutren. Another preparation is Agolutin Depot, which was introduced by 1960 and appears to remain marketed in the Czech Republic and Slovakia today.
Carbonylation of alcohols as illustrated by the Cativa process for the production of acetic acid. Formic acid is prepared by a different carbonylation pathway, also starting from methanol. Oxidation of aldehydes with air using cobalt and manganese catalysts. The required aldehydes can be obtained from alkenes by hydroformylation. Oxidation of hydrocarbons using air. For simple alkanes, this method is inexpensive but not selective enough to be useful. Allylic and benzylic compounds undergo more selective oxidations. Alkyl groups on a benzene ring are oxidized to the carboxylic acid, regardless of its chain length. Benzoic acid from toluene, terephthalic acid from para-xylene, and phthalic acid from ortho-xylene are illustrative large-scale conversions. Acrylic acid is generated from propene. Hydrocarboxylation of alkenes. This method is effective for alkenes that generate secondary and tertiary carbocations, e.g. isobutylene to pivalic acid. In the Koch reaction, the addition of water and carbon monoxide to alkenes or alkynes is catalyzed by strong acids. Hydrocarboxylations involve the simultaneous addition of water and CO. Such reactions are sometimes called "Reppe chemistry." HC≡CH + CO + H2O → CH2=CH−CO2H Hydrolysis of esters. Triglycerides, obtained from plant or animal oils, are precursors to long-chain carboxylic acids are related to soap making. Fermentation of ethanol. This method is used in the production of vinegar. Carbonation, such as the Kolbe–Schmitt reaction as a route to salicylic acid, precursor to aspirin.
The burning wells needed to be extinguished as, without active efforts, Kuwait would lose billions of dollars in oil revenues. It was predicted by experts that the fires would burn for between two and five years before losing pressure and going out on their own. The companies responsible for extinguishing the fires initially were Bechtel, Red Adair Company (now sold to Global Industries of Louisiana), Boots and Coots, and Wild Well Control. Safety Boss was the fourth company to arrive but ended up extinguishing and capping the most wells of any other company: 180 of the 600. Other companies including Cudd Well/Pressure Control, Neal Adams Firefighters, and Kuwait Wild Well Killers were also contracted. According to Larry H. Flak, a petroleum engineer for Boots and Coots International Well Control, 90% of all the 1991 fires in Kuwait were put out with nothing but sea water, sprayed from powerful hoses at the base of the fire. The extinguishing water was supplied to the arid desert region by re-purposing the oil pipelines that prior to the arson attack had pumped oil from the wells to the Persian Gulf. The pipeline had been mildly damaged but, once repaired, its flow was reversed to pump Persian gulf seawater to the burning oil wells. The extinguishing rate was approximately 1 every 7–10 days at the start of efforts but then with experience gained and the removal of the mine fields that surrounded the burning wells, the rate increased to 2 or more per day.
